Hampta pass lies at the altitude of 4270 M (14,000 ft.) on the Pir Panjal Range of Himalaya in Himachal Pradesh. The trek starts from Jobdi Nala and ends at Chhatru, offering unobstructed views of the Hanging Glacier, vertical rock wall, tiny lakes, waterfalls, & streams.
The treks begin from lush green Kullu Valley and end in the beautiful desert of Spiti Valley. The pass lies on the traditional route connecting Kullu valley to Lahaul & Spiti valley. This thrilling crossover makes this trek a special one. You can see two different worlds while standing on the top of the pass, a view which you will cherish all your life.
Hampta Pass is famous for its surreal beauty, unpredictable terrains, ever-changing landscapes, and most importantly the crescent moon lake, Chandratal.
What to Expect on Hampta Pass Trek?
1. Picturesque Landscapes – With the onset of the Monsoon at beginning of July, the valley starts blossoming with varied flowers sprouting out of the ground. At times you may be trekking with a bed of flowers on both sides of the trail. The lush green meadows are add-ons to the magic.
2. Waterfalls & River Crossing at Chikka. The mighty waterfall and the river crossing make the trek exciting. During peak monsoon (July-August), you need to be very careful and alert while crossing the water streams as the force of water is quite high. But it’s something that fuels your adventurous soul and gives you the adrenaline rush.
3. Plains of Balu-ka-Gera: Balu Ka Ghera or the bed of sand is the last campsite before Hampta Pass. It’s fascinating and one of its kind place next to the river with vertical mountain wall standing tall on both sides. The ground is a sand bed formed mainly by the sand and dust brought down from the mountain slopes along with water streams. Relish the sunset behind the snow-clad mountain peaks and find peace within.
4. Chandratal Lake: Getting to visit the crescent moon-shaped lake, shining the sky across its surface is an unforgettable experience and should not be missed. Chandratal (the Moon Lake) in the Spiti Valley is one of the most charismatic lakes in the lap of the Himalayas. Sprawled over an area of 2.5 Km, this enticing lake is perched on the Samudra Tapu plateau which lies near Chandra river. It is on the bucket list of many and is the trekker’s paradise, the entire effort of crossing Hampta Pass is worth every bit once you reach Chandratal.
5. Thrilling Crossover – The Hampta Pass trek takes you through an overwhelming crossover of stunning landscapes. Beginning from the thick Pine forests to the lush green grasslands at Chikka and then sandy, rocky plains of Balu ka Ghera to the steep, snowy land at Hampta Pass followed by a descent to Shea Goru Campsite in the cold desert of Spiti Valley – the terrains of the trek will keep you mesmerized. If the weather is clear, you can see the strikingly different landscapes from Hampta Pass, lush green Kullu Valley on one side, and the barren land of Lahaul Spiti on the other, a view you will never forget.
The 24 km long trek will be covered in 4 days. You will trek approximately 5-6 hours every day, gaining an altitude of 1500-2000 ft. approx. everyday. The trek days are short and most of the trek is an easy hike in the valley. But the ascent to the Pass becomes a little difficult with a long walk of almost 9 hours. Also, one needs to be alert and cautious while crossing the water streams and descending from the Pass.
The trek suits all kinds of trekkers and is a good one for beginners.
Hampta Pass is graded as an easy to moderate level trek considering the altitude gain and terrain. It requires considerable fitness and endurance. The trek is highly recommended for beginners and can be a good start for your Himalayan Trekking endeavors.
However, if you are keen to explore this mesmerizing trail, you need at least 1-2 months to build the endurance and strength to do this trek. The preparation needs commitment.

The Hampta Pass trail is very old and is being used for ages. The terrain doesn’t have any technical section or any challenging section. The only sections which are risky are the river crossing and the descent from the pass. Your trek leader will brief and guide you about the same, do follow his instructions carefully.
The 24 Km-long trek will be covered in four days. The altitude gain is significant as you will start your trek from approx. 6500 ft. from Manali and will reach 14,000 ft. at Hampta Pass on the third day itself.
The campsites are placed to maintain steady altitude gain and we will be trekking at a steady pace. Still, AMS can hit you. You need to keep yourself hydrated and should be alert for AMS symptoms like headache, dizziness, and nausea. Inform your trek leader immediately, if you feel ill or uncomfortable.

Manali, the starting point for Hampta Pass Trek, is a picturesque town nestled in Beas River Valley and is a popular tourist destination. The town is well connected to Delhi and other major cities of Himachal Pradesh. There is no railway station and airport in Manali town, however, one can easily reach Manali by Road (Bus / Taxi).
By Air – The nearest airport from Manali is Bhuntar. The airport is named as Kullu-Manali Airport as it connects both tourist destinations and is well connected by flights from Delhi. From Bhuntar, Manali is only 50 Km away and one can easily find a Bus or Taxi for the journey.
By Train – The nearest railway station from Manali is the Jogindernagar railway station which connects the hill station with several important cities. One can also explore the option of Chandigarh and Ambala Railway stations to reach Manali by train. From the railheads, you have to take Bus / Taxi which will be available at a reasonable cost.
By Road – Regular bus services are available from Delhi to Manali. The overnight distance can be covered comfortably by Volvo Buses. You can hire a taxi as well.
Road distances are as follows – Delhi to Manali: 540 km, Kullu to Manali: 40 km, Shimla to Manali: 250 km
Hampta Pass trail remains open for trekking from June to October, for the rest of the year, the trail is covered with snow and due to harsh weather conditions trekking is not feasible. Though the trail remains open for almost 5 months, the valley changes its shade throughout these months.
June – Be prepared for snow starting from Balu Ka Ghera onwards till the Hampta Pass. You may get snow even after descending in Lahul Valley. Layered up yourself and use the right winter gears to tackle cold and cold-related injuries.

July & August – The snow will start to melt rapidly but few patches may remain on higher reaches around the Pass. July brings the Monsoon to the region and the valley blossoms. You will find blue poppies and colorful wildflowers welcoming you on the trail. So many flowers get sprout in the entire valley turning it into the valley of flowers of Himachal. The cloudy skies, lush green meadows, and flowers on the trails unfold different magic.
Temperature Variations – Day : 15 °C to 20 °C | Night : 1 °C to 5 °C.

September – Monsson will start retreating and you will be able to see the clear skies and mountain views. This is the best time to relish the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. You can soothe your eyes with snow-clad mountain peaks standing tall against the deep blue skies.
The region starts getting cold at end of September. The chilly winds make the night temperature fall below zero. The trail remains open for trekking in October as well but it is not as enjoyable as it is at other times.
Temperature Variations – Day: 12°C to 15°C | Night : 0°C to 3°C.
Best Time – Best season to go for the Hampta pass trek is from mid-June to September barring monsoon time.
While trekking in June you will find snowy patches starting from Balu Ka Ghera itself. Also, the pass will have enough that you may have to use microspikes, gaiter, etc. while crossing it.
In July, there may be snow at the High Altitude Pass. However, other times you will only see the snow-clad mountain peaks.
ATM – The last ATM will be in Manali. We recommend you withdraw sufficient cash before you start your road journey from Manali.
Electricity – No electricity throughout the trek. Carry additional batteries or a power bank for your camera/mobile.
Mobile Network – All major networks are available in Manali. However, once you leave Manali you won’t get a mobile network on the trek.
The Hampta Pass trek is primarily a monsoon trek and so you have to prepare accordingly. The ‘must carry’ list is different for monsoon treks from other treks as you need to carry rain gear like a poncho, rain cover for the backpack, etc. The detailed list will be shared with you by mail.

Yes, it is absolutely safe. Women will be sharing the tent/rooms with each other. In case you are the only woman on the trek, you will be given a separate tent/room.
In case of a medical emergency, the nearest hospitals are in Manali only.
Hampta Pass trek doesn’t have many exit points as we are crossing a high-altitude pass. If you haven’t crossed the pass, then you have to return to Jobra to reach Manali. After crossing the pass, you have to head to Chhatru to reach Manali.
Throughout the trek, we will be camping on sharing basis. The toilet tents will be available on each campsite.
No bathing facility is available on the trek. You need to carry toiletry and essential to maintain personal hygiene on the trek.
We follow a pre-decided wholesome menu for trekkers considering the nutritional requirement. We serve vegetarian food along with eggs. Packed lunch will be provided while you are trekking.
Yes, you can. Just inform your trek leader and he/she will make the necessary arrangement. This will be a chargeable service.
Hampta Pass Trek starts right after Manali so after finishing the trek if you have time, you can spend 1-2 days exploring the beautiful town Manali and its nearby attractions like Hidimba Temple, Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, etc.
One can also explore the Beas River and can enjoy River Rafting near Bhuntar.
Professional Trek Leader and Guide will be accompanying you throughout the trek. Hampta Pass is graded as an Easy to Moderate trek that doesn’t need any technical assistance and equipment.

Hampta Pass is a crossover trek. We will start trekking from Chikka and ends at Chhatur. So it won’t be feasible to leave baggage at Chikka and collect it later.
However, you can liaise with your Hotel in Manali and can keep your extra luggage there and collect it after your trek. Don’t leave valuable items like cash, mobile phones, cameras, etc. in the baggage.
The other option is to carry only what is necessary on the trek.
