Hampta Pass

  • 5 Days
  • Pickup / Drop - Manali
  • Difficulty - Moderate
  • Min 5℃ to Max 25℃
  • 4270 M / 14,000 ft.
  • 24 Km

Hampta pass lies at the altitude of 4270 M (14,000 ft.) on the Pir Panjal Range of Himalaya in Himachal Pradesh. The trek starts from Jobdi Nala and ends at Chhatru, offering unobstructed views of the Hanging Glacier, vertical rock wall, tiny lakes, waterfalls, & streams.

The treks begin from lush green Kullu Valley and end in the beautiful desert of Spiti Valley. The pass lies on the traditional route connecting Kullu valley to Lahaul & Spiti valley. This thrilling crossover makes this trek a special one. You can see two different worlds while standing on the top of the pass, a view which you will cherish all your life.

Hampta Pass is famous for its surreal beauty, unpredictable terrains, ever-changing landscapes, and most importantly the crescent moon lake, Chandratal.

What to Expect on Hampta Pass Trek?

1. Picturesque Landscapes – With the onset of the Monsoon at beginning of July, the valley starts blossoming with varied flowers sprouting out of the ground. At times you may be trekking with a bed of flowers on both sides of the trail. The lush green meadows are add-ons to the magic.

2. Waterfalls & River Crossing at Chikka. The mighty waterfall and the river crossing make the trek exciting. During peak monsoon (July-August), you need to be very careful and alert while crossing the water streams as the force of water is quite high. But it’s something that fuels your adventurous soul and gives you the adrenaline rush.

3. Plains of Balu-ka-Gera: Balu Ka Ghera or the bed of sand is the last campsite before Hampta Pass. It’s fascinating and one of its kind place next to the river with vertical mountain wall standing tall on both sides. The ground is a sand bed formed mainly by the sand and dust brought down from the mountain slopes along with water streams. Relish the sunset behind the snow-clad mountain peaks and find peace within.

 4. Chandratal Lake: Getting to visit the crescent moon-shaped lake, shining the sky across its surface is an unforgettable experience and should not be missed. Chandratal (the Moon Lake) in the Spiti Valley is one of the most charismatic lakes in the lap of the Himalayas. Sprawled over an area of 2.5 Km, this enticing lake is perched on the Samudra Tapu plateau which lies near Chandra river. It is on the bucket list of many and is the trekker’s paradise, the entire effort of crossing Hampta Pass is worth every bit once you reach Chandratal.

5. Thrilling Crossover – The Hampta Pass trek takes you through an overwhelming crossover of stunning landscapes. Beginning from the thick Pine forests to the lush green grasslands at Chikka and then sandy, rocky plains of Balu ka Ghera to the steep, snowy land at Hampta Pass followed by a descent to Shea Goru Campsite in the cold desert of Spiti Valley – the terrains of the trek will keep you mesmerized. If the weather is clear, you can see the strikingly different landscapes from Hampta Pass, lush green Kullu Valley on one side, and the barren land of Lahaul Spiti on the other, a view you will never forget.

Trek in Nutshell

The 24 km long trek will be covered in 4 days. You will trek approximately 5-6 hours every day, gaining an altitude of 1500-2000 ft. approx. everyday.
